Ukuleles come in several sizes. The three most common are soprano, concert and tenor. The good news: they’re all tuned the same (G C E A), and every chord shape is the same. Whatever you learn on one, you can play right away on another.
The sizes
- Soprano (about 53 cm long): the smallest, classic ukulele with a bright, typical sound. Ideal for small hands and school classes.
- Concert (about 58 cm): a little bigger, more room between frets, a bit louder and rounder. Good for older kids and adults.
- Tenor (about 66 cm): a fuller, warmer sound and more frets. Tenor ukuleles are often played with a low G too.
There’s also the baritone ukulele. It’s even bigger and tuned differently (D G B E, like the four highest guitar strings). The same finger shape has a different chord name there than on the three smaller ukuleles.
In the app
The tuner and all chord charts work the same for soprano, concert and tenor – there’s nothing to change. If your ukulele has a low G, tap “Other tuning …” at the bottom of the tuner and choose “Low G” (more in low G and D tuning).
